Karl Fredric Putnam was born March 28, 1879, to a prominent family in Mt. Carmel, Illinois–banker and attorney Samuel R. Putnam and Agatha Weinbach Putnam. Claudine V. Mason was born on September 7, 1899, in Wingate, Indiana, the daughter of George W. and Edna Win (Phillips) Van Cleave. She earned her B.A. at Northwestern University in 1921. While a student, Mason was president of the sophomore class, a member of the student council, and was active in the YWCA and Shi Ai, the junior women's honorary society.
