Mrs. Claudine V. Mason was appointed Counselor of Women in 1948. In 1952 the titles of counselor to women and counselor to men were changed to dean, as they have remained since. Claudine V. Mason was born on September 7, 1899, in Wingate, Indiana, the daughter of George W. and Edna Win (Phillips) Van Cleave. She earned her B.A. at Northwestern University in 1921. While a student, Mason was president of the sophomore class, a member of the student council, and was active in the YWCA and Shi Ai, the junior women's honorary society.
