Claudine V. Mason was born on September 7, 1899, in Wingate, Indiana, the daughter of George W. and Edna Win (Phillips) Van Cleave. She earned her B.A. at Northwestern University in 1921. While a student, Mason was president of the sophomore class, a member of the student council, and was active in the YWCA and Shi Ai, the junior women's honorary society.
